Samsung Electronics ups LCD screen production target for Slovak plant (AFP via Yahoo! News)

Samsung Electronics said Sunday that it is the first to manufacture 16 gigabit (Gb) NAND flash chips, which will allow for memory cards up to 16 gigabytes (GB), the highest capacity available. The chips are fabricated using a 51-nanometer manufacturing process.

Unlike its previous 1 GB flash chip production, the chips are not being manufactured at the 60 nanometer scale. Instead, Samsung managed to reduce this down to just 51 nanometers, and equates this to a 60% increase in manufacturing efficiency.

South Korean giant Samsung Electronics announced Monday that it intends to produce 12 million LCD screens a year at the official launch of its 320-million-euro (437-million-dollar) plant at Voderady, western Slovakia.
